Internal Medicine Q & A

What is Internal Medicine?

Internal medicine is often known as general medicine. This type of medicine is focused on the health and wellness of adults, much like pediatrics is focused on the health and wellness of children. At SimplyCare, internal medicine specialist Dr. Ashok K. Mehta provides many types of care to treat chronic conditions, prevent disease, and promote overall health and wellness. Dr. Mehta serves as a primary care doctor for his patients, where he manages their health on an ongoing basis.

When is an Appointment With an Internal Medicine Physician Needed?

Most people need to have a physical exam once per year, even if they haven't been ill. A yearly physical is a good time for the physician to make sure that the patient is still healthy and that no new issues are emerging. Patients should also schedule an appointment whenever they are experiencing new symptoms or health issues. The earlier the patient seeks treatment, the higher the chances of dealing with that health problem quickly and successfully. Anyone who suffers from chronic conditions may need to see the doctor on a more frequent basis. This includes conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and any other chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment and monitoring.

How Can Patients Prepare for an Appointment With an Internal Medicine Doctor?

For a patient's first appointment at SimplyCare, the staff strives to make the process easy. Patients can fill out some forms ahead of time. It's generally recommended that patients arrive around 15 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment time. Patients should always bring their insurance cards to the appointment, and be prepared to pay any co-payment at the time of the appointment. The doctor may also have some special recommendations for the patient; for example, a patient may need to fast before some blood tests.
